African Americans in the media

 

Write one-page abstract comparing three movies that black actors and actresses acted for a class for African Americans in the

media. This course examines the historical and theoretical issues concerning the representation of African Americans in the media.
Roots- A dramatization of author Alex Haley’s family line from ancestor Kunta Kinte’s enslavement to his descendants’ liberation.
Coming to America- An extremely pampered African Prince travels to Queens, New York, and goes undercover to find a wife whom he can

respect for her intelligence and will.
The Black Partner- T’Challa, the King of Wakanda, rises to the throne in the isolated, technologically advanced African nation, but

his claim is challenged by a vengeful outsider who was a childhood victim of T’Challa’s father’s mistake.

(This is the description of the class To learn the historical trajectory of African Americans in American media, including the

significant industrial, political and cultural developments that have shaped the roles for African Americans both in front of and

behind the camera. To learn how African Americans, in their roles as media producers, performers, and viewers, have constructed

diverse representations of themes, narratives, and/or topics related to black identity. To develop and deepen research and critical

thinking skills while writing a paper that synthesizes the diverse approaches to the representation of African American identity
