Assignment Instructions
A Short Paper Assignment allows you, early in the course, to demonstrate your research skills. With this assignment, you will learn how to do proper and adequate research and write a short paper and prepare you for writing the research paper. Pick any topic in American history from the period 1815-1877 for this second written assignment.
This short paper is at least three double-spaced pages of text (Times New Roman, font size 12) and you must consult a minimum of two academically credible sources (in addition to the assigned reading if you also use and cite the textbook or any source I provided in forum discussions?in other words, you are to do research and find two scholarly sources in addition to any sources mentioned in class). Bibliographies and citations will be in the Chicago Manual of Style format. The Chicago Manual is available online through the university’s library.
The short paper needs to be turned in through the assignment section for grading. If you use any of the information from your sources word-for-word, you must cite the source by using endnotes or footnotes. If you read the information and write it in your own words and if the information is not common knowledge, then you must cite the source because you are summarizing or paraphrasing someone else’s information.
The short paper must include a cover page with your name, course number and course title, instructor’s name, and date. You must also include a bibliography at the end of your paper. While composing your paper, use proper English. Do not use abbreviations, contractions, passive voice, or first/ second person (I, you, we, our, etc). Before submitting your paper, check your grammar and use spell check. Remember, the way you talk is not the way you write a paper. Please label your paper (the name you give the Word document) as follows: lastnamefirstnameHIST102ShortPaper.
Your paper must be at least three full pages of text, not counting title page, bibliography, or source notes, and at least two sources must be academically credible rather than just superficial summarizes from webpages or encyclopedias. Use scholarly articles and books; in other words, use the university’s library!
Explain your topic in your own way. Add full source citations for any source notation placed in the text, and you must cite sources in your text to give credit where credit in due. Use information, ideas, quotations from sources ONLY to support what you say. Do not let sources say it for you.
For this paper and college papers in general:
?use Times New Roman 12-point font
?double space the text (and do NOT add extra white space between paragraphs)
?indent the first line of each paragraph
?use margins of at least one inch on all four sides of each page
?use a flushed left margin
?use a ragged right margin (to avoid hard-to-read irregular spacing of flush-right margin)
?place one space and only one between sentences and after colons
?place periods and commas before closing quote marks
?place the source note number in the text AFTER a clause or a sentence, AFTER a comma or period, and AFTER the close quote mark
?place the source note number in the text BEFORE a semi-colon, colon, or m-dash
?use double quotation marks and, if needed, single marks therein
?use “down style” capitalization in your text
?consult the Chicago Manual of Style regarding spelling, punctuation, grammar, source notes, bibliography
The Chicago Manual of Style is fully searchable and freely accessible through the university’s library. (Yes, you may use APA or MLA if you already know one of those styles.)
