Americorps National Civilian Community Corps Motivational Statement

Americorps National Civilian Community Corps Motivational Statement
Topic: “We would like to understand more about you and your reasons for applying to AmeriCorps. Please share with us why you would like to serve with the AmeriCorps program.”

I do not need any sources.

I have trouble putting my thoughts into eloquent words, so here is a little background information about me: my parents lost their jobs around the same time when I was 4. In order to get by, we required government assistance before my mom got back on her feet, after completing her bachelor’s degree, 6 years later. I haven’t forgotten what it was like to depend upon other people for such simple things as food and clothing, and I feel like I owe it those who helped me and my family to pay it forward. I was in Girl Scouts for 13 years, taking part in various community service projects. My junior year of high school I started a service project to collect various toiletries and personal items to donate to a local battered woman’s shelter. I helped with the Carly Henley Project concert. I’ve given my time to dozens of organizations on a smaller (one day) scale. For me, volunteering was never something I did for recognition, or for college/scholarship applications; it was just something that I needed to do to satisfy something within myself. Whenever I volunteer, I find that it changes my perception of the world. It teaches me new things about people, situations, what it means to work together and cooperate as a team and, most importantly, it teaches me what it means to be compassionate. It is my experience that volunteers get more than they give, as hard as that may be to believe. It enhances our self-esteem because it reminds us that there are people out there who need us, who need our help. It can be challenging and tough, but by volunteering we ease the pressure for those who need help. Volunteering is the best way to show my gratitude for everything that has been done for me, and share with those who are in need. It is also not lost on me that the opportunity to serve with the Americorps has the potential to create great life-long friends who share in their passion and commitment to serve others.
