Step 4: Analysis of the topic (50 points)

For the final step, you will use the primary and secondary sources you have gathered, along with the Abbott class text and at least one more reliable and appropriate source (it does not need to be a scholarly sources, but it does need to be reliable), to analyze the topic of the article you selected and consider the topic?s significance. In a three to four page essay, answer the following questions:
? What does the issue/event explored in the scholarly article you chose indicate about the lives of people who were outside of those groups that held political, social, and/or economic power in Portland at the time? Why was this a significant issue/event for its time? As you answer these questions, keep in mind the larger context and the time in which the events took place.
? What significance does the topic, or one?s knowledge of the topic, have in terms of understanding the city of Portland? You are welcome to think of this second question in terms of our societal responsibility to know history, or in terms of the impact that knowing this history has had on you personally.
In order to complete this step and write a compelling essay, you will need to reread the article again carefully, taking notes on significant ideas and key points. You will also need to do a little more research on your topic in order to find appropriate sources. Your paper should be focused, have a thesis that you develop, and contain a compelling introduction and conclusion. Be sure to make clear connections between your ideas using strong transitions.
