Pre-Lab Worksheet

All work must be very neat and organized. If your penmanship is poor, you must type all responses. If you need to organize your thoughts, please use a separate sheet of paper.

Question 1 (2 p) Sketch a plot of t90 vs. pH assuming kobs for the ASA hydrolysis steadily increases with increasing pH.
Question 2 (2 p) Sketch a plot of t90 vs. [Glycerol] ([Glycerol] is the glycerol concentration) assuming kobs for the ASA hydrolysis steadily decreases with increasing glycerol concentration.
Question 3 (4 p) Now sketch three separate plots on the same axes: t90 vs. [Glycerol] at pH = 6.0, t90 vs. [Glycerol] at pH = 7.0 and t90 vs. [Glycerol] at pH = 8.0. That is, given the above plots, what would the COMBINED effect look like? Label and be careful with your scaling. Clearly indicate where the optimum shelf life occurs.
Question 4 (2 p) ON THE RIGHT BELOW sketch a plot of t90 vs. [ASA] (the aspirin concentration). Take care in how you draw the plot, for this indicates what assumptions you are making about the relationship between ASA concentration and the hydrolysis kinetics.
