Participant,
Anela is a 10-year-old girl with a diagnosis of down syndrome. She is an only child, very outspoken and loves to spend time with her mom and dad. She enjoys listening to music, playing on the computer, and coloring books. Anela does a fantastic job communicating what she needs and what she does not need to her mother and father verbally. She does have some difficulty with writing and language, but writing primarily. She currently attends a language and writing program that is provided by her school and is on her way of expressing herself appropriately.

Select someone involved in the performance of a movement task that

interests you.

Describe the individual you observe and his/her movement performance.
Explain what the participant’s body is doing during the performance of the activity.
Then, using your experiences, common knowledge, and information you have learned in class, describe the movement as you believe it will be performed in the future. “Future” means enough time in days, months, or years to come that the movement will be performed differently, even thought the participant is trying to perform the exact same task. The amount of difference will vary according to the movement and the age of your participant. Depending on the age and ability of your participant, your description of future movement could be a progression or regression.
Lastly, provide recommendations for your participant to improve in this movement. In other words, what can the individual do to move closer toward perfection of this task? These recommendations are only for the purposes of this paper and do not need to be mentioned to your participant.
Record responses provided and summarize your results. Consider biopsychosocial influences on development and physical activity throughout the lifespan. For example, using physical, cognitive and/or psychosocial perspectives, how might you understand the situation and explain it within the context of motor development throughout the lifespan?

Your paper should be typed, double spaced, and approximately three pages in length. Include each of the following sections/subheadings in your final paper:

Description of your participant.
Description of your participant performing the selected movement task.
Description of your participant performing the same movement in the future.
Your recommendations to facilitate your participant’s progress in this movement task.

Research and find one scholarly journal article related to the topic of cognitive and motor development. Critically review the journal article and compare the final conclusions provided by the author to your conclusions about motor development from your interview/observation. Include the following sections in your journal article review:

Purpose of study
Review of literature (key terms defined, relevant theories outlined & previous research cited)
Outline of research design (participants identified, tests described,

research design outlined)

Results (key findings summarized in your own words)
Discussion (interpretation of results in real life settings, discussion

of how the knowledge gained applies to you as a professional)

You may want to interview your participant to gain insight concerning his/her past movement.
Although someone your age might be easiest to locate as a participant, you may find this assignment more interesting if you select someone who is older or younger than you.
Select a movement task that interests you so that the assignment is more meaningful and fun to complete.
