Classical music

Classical and Romantic composers created music that ordinary “people in the street” knew and loved. Yet contemporary “classical” music goes largely unknown to general audiences. In your opinion, what has brought about this change in the relationship between contemporary “classical” music and its audiences? Why aren’t Boulez and Stockhausen as popular in our time as Mozart and Beethoven were in theirs?
