Step One: Gather quantitative data on population characteristics by using the census tract or community information from the U.S. Census website (U.S. Census material can also be found in the Madonna University Library). For this part, you are to follow the procedures learned in earlier class meetings. Data for this part of the assignment will include:
1. How many people live in the tract/community/neighborhood?
2. What is the age, sex, and race/ethnicity distribution?
3. What family structures are evident there? Which predominate?
4. What income groups are represented in the tract?
5. What occupational groups are represented? Which predominate?
6. What is the poverty rate?
7. What is the predominant educational attainment level?
8. Other
Step Two: Gather qualitative data by a “window survey” of the community or tract selected. A window survey is a composite of subjective data collected by personal observation while driving or walking around a tract/community/neighborhood. If doing this project as a group, all members should do this together in the same vehicle if possible. Data from this survey should include:
1. Identification and description of the boundaries of the tract/community/neighborhood.
2. What type of housing and condition of buildings?
3. How is the land used? e.g. vacant, industry, parks
4. Transportation observed (cars, public transportation, etc.)
5. Social welfare services – include health and social services
6. Stores – e.g. shopping centers, “mom & pop” stores, party stores
7. Street scene – whom do you see on the streets and what are they doing?
8. Race, ethnicity – whom do you see?
9. Do people “hang out” and if so, where?
10. Community growth – what signs of newness do you see?
11. Religion – what type of churches do you see?
12. Schools – what type and condition of buildings?
13. Other observations
