Directions:
1.Grab the reader’s attention by creating a fitting, descriptive title for your paper. You can summarize the content to follow in the

title. Or, you can devise a clever title connected to something discussed in the body of your paper. The title serves the same purpose

as a newspaper headline; it entices the reader to review what follows.
2.Provide an opening paragraph. Introduce the film to the reader and briefly describe its plot in your own words. Note: When initially

mentioning a character, let the reader know who portrays that character. Example: Julia (played by Meryl Streep) acts as the love

interest for Daniel (played by Albert Brooks) in Defending Your Life.
3.Create the body, or middle paragraphs, of your paper. Carefully review the comprehensive description of the 8 setting characteristics

and the 12 costume/wardrobe characteristics below. (They are taken from the characteristics on p. 352 and p. 357 in Understanding

Movies.) Select at least 4 setting characteristics and 4 different wardrobe characteristics to detailedly discuss in terms of how they

are used in a film viewed in Lesson 9, “Film Viewing Assignment #5.” (To recap, a few characteristics are the same for both setting and

wardrobe, such as class/income level. Do not discuss this characteristic for both areas�only one.) Cite specific illustrations to

demonstrate your observations. Additionally, please clearly identify or label each characteristic as you fully describe its

implementation in the film.
4.Explain how the costumes and the settings detract from, blend with, or enhance the screenplay.
5.Provide a final paragraph, a conclusion. Briefly note your overall assessment of the film viewed. Did you enjoy the film? Dislike it?

Why? Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?

2.age: Is an outfit suitable for the age of a character? Is it intentionally too dowdy or youthful?
3.body attitude: How would you describe a character’s posture? Ashamed and caved in? Tall and proud? Is the outfit worn with confidence

or embarrassment?
4.body exposure: How much of a character’s body is hidden? Revealed? Is an outfit shapeless? Awfully tight? Typically, the more body

uncovered, the more lascivious the outfit.
5.class: What is the discernible socioeconomic status of the characters wearing costumes/outfits? How do the outfits and accessories

insinuate one’s income level?
6.color: Do the costume colors have any symbolic significance? Are they patterns or solids? Bright or washed out? What particular

colors are emphasized?
7.fabric: Is the costume material plain, rough, or delicate and flimsy? What materials are apparent-cotton, polyester, silk, wool,

etc.?
8.function: Is the outfit intended for play or work? Is it supposed to command attention by its brilliance?
9.image: What is the general impression produced by an outfit? Elegant, prim and proper, sexy, tawdry? What outfit parts help to convey

an image? Consider the significance of lace, high collars, short or long lengths, etc.
10.period: What era/time period is represented by the wardrobe? Is it an acceptable or precise reconstruction?
11.sex: Do men’s and women’s costumes/outfits accentuate femininity, fussiness, virility, etc.?
12.silhouette: Is the outfit baggy and loose or formfitting? In between? How would you describe the outline of the character’s outfit?

The Setting of a Movie Involves a Regard for the Following Characteristics:
1.class/income level: What is the discernible socioeconomic status of the characters? What pieces of furniture or sets (residences,

office buildings) point to a specific income level? What large props, such as cars or jets, are indicators of class?
2.decoration: How is the set (scenery) decorated? Are status symbols present? How is a character’s taste demonstrated? Consider

everything from specific pieces of furniture to wallpaper, artwork, and knickknacks. Also consider large props, from automobiles to

planes.
3.exterior or interior: How are characterization, mood, and/or theme established with an exterior or interior set? What exterior or

interior sets are featured prominently or meaningfully?
4.period: What era/time period is represented by the setting? How are you able to discern the specific era by the scenery?
5.size: How spacious or crammed is the set? Wealthy folks typically inhabit roomy quarters; poor folks typically inhabit crowded

quarters.
6.studio or location: If an authentic location is used as a set, why was it selected? If both studio and location sets are chosen, then

why? What studio or location sets are evidenced?
7.style: Is the set intentionally distorted and stylized? Is it lifelike? Is there a specific style, such as French provincial, Art

Deco, or glossy contemporary? What pieces of furniture, knickknacks, etc. are indicators of style?
8.symbolic function: What type of general image is projected by the set and its decorations/furnishings?

Notice that class, period, and symbolic function/image are characteristics of both movie costumes and settings
