crime prevention

ASSIGNMENT 3 (located in F ORUMS)
Your job is to assess 7 crime prevention programs and determining whether each is useful in preventing crime.
The Seven Programs come from an article titled “What Doesn’t Work” (page 7 of the article), a link can be found in
the resources.
What Doesn’t Work” – in preventing crime
-here is the list of crime prevention programs that I want you to examine:
1) Gun Buyback
2) DARE
3) Neighborhood Watch
4) Storefront Police Offices
5) Scared Straight
6) Home Detention with Electronic Monitoring
7) Intensive Supervision on Parole or Probation (ISP)
rank these 7 programs (from 1 to 7) based on their overall worth to our society.
Consider their effectiveness in preventing crime.
Consider the costs of implementing the programs-in time and money.
Consider any other benefits that these programs may bestow.
Use your own experience, if applicable.
Use the internet to find statistics or research on these programs.
Use any resources that may provide substance to your argument…
You are free to use any resources that you see fit in assessing the programs.
(begin by reading and then applying the 25 techniques for situational crime prevention-4
also linked in the resources section of our course tools-to the 7 programs). V
You will have 2 weeks to complete the assignment (due at noon.
EACH student will submit a final product by email or in person that includes:
A simple list of the seven programs, ranked from I to 7.
An explanation for each ranking choice and/or a list of pros and cons for each program.

example: I ranked gun buyback 5th because the program is fairly expenSive compared to the others according to
my research, and the results have been shown to be minimal. However, I do not believe it is the least effective
program because it implements a number of the situational crime prevention techniques, such as X and Y. Ithink
that the lack of demonstrably effective results from buyback may be due to the fact that the program’s success is
difficult to measure. Since gun buyback is essentially trying to prevent crime from occurring rather than addressing
crime that has occurred or that is inevitable, measuring its success is more abstract. In my final assessment, I believe
that this program may be worthwhile overall if it prevents even one murder or accidental death by facilitating the
removal of unnecessary firearms from the population. Overall, the cost of implementation may be high, but there are
no readily available alternatives for this type of program and its potential for benefit is great.
