Critical Review of a Journal Paper

The assignment is designed to demonstrate your • understanding and knowledge of ISD (Information System Development) practices • understanding of issues that contribute to the body of knowledge of ISD • understanding of ISD analytical frameworks • critical analysis skills in reviewing an academic research paper • ability to reflect on the relevant ISD literature and draw meaningful conclusions from your reflections • ability to listen, discuss and draw connections and conclusions with other students’ articles Write a critical review of a published journal article that explores aspects of Information Systems Development (ISD) methodologies or approaches. The journal is Carmel, E. , Espinosa, J. A. & Dubinsky, Y. (2010). “Follow the Sun” Workflow in Global Software Development. (2010). Journal of Management Information Systems, 27(1), 17-37. ) The Review The review is to be written as an academic paper that reflects your understanding of ISD practices. It is up to you what aspects, issues or arguments you put forward but they must be relevant to the IS discipline and ISD practices and must grounded in current literature. As an academic paper, all claims and assertions must be adequately substantiated with appropriate evidence. You are expected to use other literature and references, preferably from current journal or conference papers, to substantiate your argument in the review. All references must be appropriately cited and referenced. Your paper must be relevant academically and, where appropriate, indicate implications for practice. The style and form of the essay should be consistent with review articles published in IS journals. The most important aspect of your paper is that it must reflect your own thinking and understanding of ISD. Please be aware of the plagiarism and collusion policies established by FIT and Monash University. Your review essay must contain at least: • An assignment cover sheet • An introduction indicating the objective, focus and direction of the essay • The body of the essay that develops the argument • The conclusions that flow from your argument • Full citations in the text of your essay to all references you have used to guide your analysis, • A bibliography listing all cited material and • The reviewed article A detailed assessment guide will be available on the Unit website. The assessment criteria will be based on • Originality of argument • Clarity of the argument and its development • Ability to synthesise and reflect on relevant issues in ISD • Depth and breadth of reflections • Use of current literature • Use of literature other than the list of recommended readings • Relevance of references • Layout, structure, spelling, etc. and adherence to style guides • Adherence to citation and reference standards • Ability to use class discussion to critically reflect on connections and conclusions between your review and other students’ reviews of articles.
