Electronic Principles
T15 coursework requires the submission of a single report which contains two
elements which together form the referred coursework element. The marks
shown indicate the maximum possible marks that each individual element
contributes to the final module mark and a pass mark of 40% is required.
The finished report should be submitted to the resource centre (Prospect
Building, St Peter’s) by the hand-in date shown above.
Coursework 1 (40%)
Write an essay about the different technologies which have been used to
implement logic systems both in the past and the present. Your essay
should be supported by references throughout.
Coursework 2 (60%)
This requires a section in the report detailing your solutions to the following
questions
Q1. The presence of a 1oV supply is to be indicated using a LED whose forward bias
voltage is 2.8V and maximum operating current is 2omA.
a) Evaluate the highest intensity solution possible using
series LED’s. (6%)
b) Design a parallel LED solution which uses 5 LED’s.
(7%)
Q2. The N-type MOSFET transistor in the following circuit has the
characteristics shown below

a) If it is to feed a drain load resistor of 2509 with a current of
1omA, what will be output voltage, VDS, and input voltage, VGS,
required?
(8%)
b) What value of R would be required to operate with a VDS of 1V
and a VGS of 5V

(8V)
Q3. For the following logic circuit
A D-F

a) Identify the Boolean expression that describes it. (6%)
b) Sketch its Karnaugh Map (6%)
c) Determine a NAND implementation of it (6%)
Q4. a) Find the binary, octal and hexadecimal equivalents to the
decimal number 1 10. (6%)
b) Evaluate the sum of the binary numbers 10101 1012 and
11001002 and check your solution in decimal. (7%)
