Emotions/personality tests

1. According to Robbins and Judge (2015), emotional intelligence or EI is “…a person’s ability to (1) perceive emotions in the self and others, (2) understand the meaning of these emotions, and (3) regulate one’s emotions accordingly in a cascading model…” (p. 104). From my previous experiences, I would define emotional intelligence as being able to understand our own and other’s emotions, as well as control it. We would also have to be aware of what emotions we are portraying along with what other people are portraying. I have also learned in previous classes that “EQ” is another acronym for emotional intelligence. Overall, I think I just simplified the book’s definition. In a study that Mayer, Roberts, and Barsade exhibited, they measured the following emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust, and contempt (2008, p. 515). However, there are more emotions than what they measured.

2. Emotional intelligence has its positive points, for instance, the intuitive appeal, emotional intelligence predicts criteria that matter, and it is biologically based. These arguments in favor of emotional intelligence seem reasonable enough to fight for the case. On the other hand, there are also some points that make people question the validity of emotional intelligence. For example, researchers have not exactly agreed on a definition, it cannot be measured, and EI is almost the same as personality, just labeled differently. I can see the arguments for and against emotional intelligence; however, I will elaborate more on the limitations and weaknesses of emotional intelligence (Robbins and Judge, 2015, p. 107-108).

First off, if researchers have teamed up to discuss emotional intelligence but cannot reach an understanding, then there is something controversial about the subject. Not only is it the definition that researchers cannot come to an agreement on, but also on how to measure emotional intelligence. Next, if researchers have not agreed on how to measure than EI, then it means that it also cannot be measured. Robbins and Judge said “Because EI is a form of intelligence, they argue, that there must be right and wrong answers for it on tests” (2015, p. 107). Last but not least, some critics argue that emotional intelligence is just another word for personality. When I first heard of the term emotional intelligence, it took me by surprise because I did not know that such term existed. I do agree that if we have a better understanding of emotional intelligence, then we will be able to better our understanding of our own emotions as well as others.

3. I took Berkley’s Body Language quiz, which can be found at https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/ei_quiz/. I received a 17/20 score. In a previous class, I also took this EI quiz and received 16/20. From the results of this quiz, it seems that I am “well-attuned to others’ emotions” which is a “vital skill for forming compassionate connections.” The end of this quiz also tells me that I have room for improvement, as does everyone else with practice. I find it interesting that to determine our EI, we have to be able to notice signs from the lips, chins, eyes, nose, etc. This means that when I am having an actual conversation with someone, I could possibly miss the signs in the blink of an eye. The only way I was able to score 17/20 was because I took my time and looked at each facial expression carefully. Nevertheless, I have always seen myself as a person who can read people’s emotions pretty well and someone who can portray my emotions how I want to.
