Coursework Brief – Semester Two 2013 – 2014
1. Health and Safety
There are a number of health and safety management systems in use, all having four common elements. The common elements are planning, performance, performance assessment and performance improvement. The effectiveness of such a management system can also be judged by considering a number of other characteristics such as health and safety culture, stakeholder involvement, effective audit and evidence of continuous improvement.

For an organisation of your choice, ideally your employer if you are working, review the effectiveness of your chosen company’s health and safety management system. (Note that this does not have to be a civil engineering organisation and that the Universities health and safety management system can be reviewed if necessary, information available on X-stream). Using the information gathered in your review, produce a structured report of not more than 1500 words discussing your findings. This should identify areas of good practice and also suggest areas for improvements, outlining possible solutions.

2. Quantitative Operational Research – Depreciation
As part of a large energy generating scheme, a company has taken responsibility for a recently installed pumping station. The six pumps and back up generating units cost £18 000 000 in total and it is anticipated that the useful life of each unit will be eight years. Resale values indicate that the units will be worth £500 000 after this time.

a. Identify and briefly describe three different techniques by which the depreciation year on year can be determined.

b. Produce hand written calculations giving the year on year value over the life cycle of the equipment for each of the techniques identified. Compare these graphically using MS Excel.

c. Compare the techniques identified and discuss the appropriate application of each.

d. Discuss the relevance of depreciation in relation to infrastructure asset management.

3 The Civil Engineering Project Life Cycle

This part of the coursework requires you to prepare a life cycle for a typical civil engineering project. Having done this, you are then required to identify project management, technical processes and commercial matters which ought to be undertaken during that phase of the project. You must also identify typical stakeholders involved in each phase and, using the NEC3 Procurement and Contract Strategy, identify a likely Form of Contract for engaging the stakeholders where appropriate. It is expected that the submission will involve both diagrams (these can be A3, suitably folded) and written work but it is not expected that this will be more than 8 pages in length
