Literature
“It is inevitable that cultural aspects will be visible to others when you interact, when you communicate in the office or when you make a decision.” (Chapter 5)
“Confusion sets in when someone behaves differently from what we expect. If the other person does not do what we want, we think he is weird or does not know how to behave properly.” (Chapter 4)
When something is asked, one does not use words such as please and thank you, therefore might be seen as rude, due to non-politeness. It is inappropriate to express strong emotions, either verbally or non-verbally, in public or with people whom you don’t know very well (Chapter 5)
There is sometimes an absence in Indian conversations of what in English conversations are considered politeness formulae: excessive use of greetings, farewells, expressions of gratitude, etc. This does not mean that Indian people are not polite; it simply means that politeness is conveyed differently. (Chapter 5)
Link to theory
“…knowing about different cultures ways of expressing: communicating verbally and non-verbally… help promote awareness among educators, schoolchildren, and caregivers of ways in which self- and self-other relationships can be understood and stimulate discussion about the interaction of externally and internally constructed identities in acculturation processes, we are only too grateful” (p.28)
