 The Fiction/Short Story Essayfor ENC 1102 is a 1,000 – 1,200-wordliterary analysisessay (approximately 4 – 5 typed pages) worth up to 150 points.
 You are required to include in the text of the essay a minimum of four(4) primary source quotations (at least two from each story) to support your thesis.
 You are required to include in the text of the essay a minimum of three(3) separate and individual secondary sources(scholarly research/literary criticism articles)to support your thesis.
 Scholarly (secondary) sources should not be general web resources (see below).

The Assignment:
Read Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” (pp. 566 – 580) and Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.” A PDF of “The Lottery” may be found in Canvas.

Write a 1,000 – 1,200 word (4 – 5 typed pages) comparison/contrast literary analysis essay in which you comparethe ways each author uses characterization, character names, and symbolism to
portray her characters’ values and beliefs and their strengths and weaknesses? How do characters’ names and symbols in each story support the theme(s) of each story? What thematic connections do you see between the twostories?
