Film Analysis Paper

Film Analysis Paper

Step One

Choose ONE movie from the pre-approved movie list on the last page.

Step Two

Identify 1-3 interpersonal communication process(es), concept(s), or theory(ies) found in the movie. This should be a process, concept, or theory discussed in your textbook (McCornack, S. (2013). Reflect and relate: An introduction to interpersonal communication 3rd Edition. Boston: Bedford/ St. Martins.) or during our class discussions. Note that you do not have to choose a concept that has already been discussed in class; you may look ahead in the book for more ideas.

Step Three

Write a 3-4 page paper describing the interpersonal communication process, concept, or theory found in the movie. Your paper should be organized as follows:

Introduction (1 paragraph)

This paragraph should contain a creative attention getter, your thesis statement (the main idea of your paper), and a preview of what you are going to discuss in the following pages.

Brief summary of movie (1 paragraph)

Here, you should describe the main idea of the movie. Some questions you may want to consider include:

Who are the main characters?

What are the main ideas of the movie?

What was the plot of the movie?

How did the movie begin & end?

What role(s) do the characters play?

What is the moral of the story?

Description of process/concept/theory (2-3 pages)

You should first describe the interpersonal process/concept/theory. To do this, you should cite sources that describe this process/concept/theory. These sources can be your textbook or other outside sources (i.e. another textbook or a journal article). Note that wikipedia.org is NOT an acceptable source.

After or while you are explaining the concept(s), you should provide specific examples from the movie that illustrate the interpersonal communication process/concept/theory you are describing.

**Note: Depending on what element(s) of the film you choose to focus on, you may need to read ahead in our textbook (e.g., if you choose a film that focuses on the workplace, you may want to read Chapter 12, which covers workplace relationships).

Conclusion (1 paragraph)

This paragraph should contain a review of the main ideas you discussed in your paper and a creative concluding remark to end your paper.
