Research Paper

Purpose: Argumentative analysis.

Audience: Anyone.

Voice: Third person with limited first person if personal experience is included.

General Requirements:
*6-8 page essay in MLA format (1800-2400 words).
*multiple paragraph organization (see below), with a standard introduction and conclusion.
*Thesis statement that specifically states your topic and opinion (claim) and may include your reasons.
*Body paragraphs that advance the claim (opinion) that you have made, offering reasons and support based upon research.
*Organization as follows: Introduction, Brief Background and Definition of the Topic, Argument (including point of concession), Possible Solution(s), Conclusion
*Research: 4-8 reliable sources, especially from the library catalog and databases
*Point of Concession of a single-sentences up to a full body paragraph, offering an admission to a good point made by the other side of the argument; this point of concession may be followed by a rebuttal/refutation to argue against the point of concession.
*MLA in-text citation for all sources used, including quotes, summaries, paraphrases, facts, and statistics.
*MLA end-text citation in the form of a Works Cited page (which does not count toward the page or word count), listing all of the sources used in-text.
*Each step of the research paper will be collected, commented on, and receive credit for completion. The research paper is worth 25% of your final grade (250 total points).

 

Prompt:
What do you think is an important issue facing America? Why is it important?
1) Define and explain your topic, 2) make an argument about why this is an important issue, and 3) then offer solution(s) for it (see the section on the essay organization for the page proportions for each section).

Remember the Following Due Dates (they are also listed on the class calendar):
W Research Paper Topic/Proposal and Research Question/Working Thesis Due
Provide a typed, 1-2 page discussion (in detail) of one or more possible research ideas; also develop a working research question and/or preliminary/working thesis. See Back to the Lake section on Researching and Seagull section R-1.
W Research Paper Annotated Bibliography (Three Sources and Relevance) Due
Provide a preliminary bibliography in MLA format of at least 3 reliable research sources and annotate them as to their usefulness and how you will use them in you paper. See Seagull section W-10 for more information as well as the online example.
W Research Paper Notes on Sources Due
Provide examples of your note-taking method(s) that include index cards, computer notes, and/or photocopies. The computer notes and photocopies should include annotations (notes, comments, underlining, and highlighting). See Seagull section R-2 for a discussion of sources.
Remember: I do not collect your notes; I will look at them and credit them in class.
W Research Paper Outline Due
Follow the examples on page to either sketch a tentative plan of how to organize your information or begin to write the research paper and develop a more formal outline. The outline should be typed and one to two pages in length. See the online outline examples.
W Research Paper Draft Due-Group Copies
It should be typed, 4-5 pages, and include your thesis, proper citations for your sources, and your works cited page. Please bring two copies of the rough draft.
M Research Paper Conferences
The final draft, typed, six to eight pages (1800-2400 words) in length, with complete MLA citation and works cited page listing the sources used should be complete and in hand for the conference.
*Submit the final version on Blackboard through SafeAssign.
W 8/16 Research Paper Presentation.
Give a 2-3 minute Presentation of your research work.

Research Paper Grade
The Research Paper Grade is worth 260 points of the final course grade. It consists of the following:
Topic-10 points
Annotated Bibliography-10 points
Notes-10 points
Outline-10 points
Rough Draft-10 points
Final Draft-200 points
Presentation-10 points
If you fail to turn in all of the steps before the final draft, the highest point total you might receive, if you get an A on the final draft, is 200 points.
Remember: If you fail to complete proper in-text citation or fail to include a works cited page with the final draft, the highest grade you can receive on the Final Draft is a D+.
