  The midterm is worth 100 points.  There are 20 problems, each worth 5 points.
Your score on the midterm will be converted to a percentage and posted in your
Portfolio with comments.
  This midterm is open book and open notes, and you may take as long as you like
on it provided that you submit the quiz no later than the due date posted in our
course schedule of the syllabus.  You may refer to your textbook, notes, and
online classroom materials, but you may not consult anyone.
  You should show all of your work to receive full credit.  If you do not show work,
you may earn only partial or no credit.
  Please type your work in your copy of the midterm, or if you prefer, create a
document containing your work.  Scanned work is also acceptable.  Be sure to
include your name in the document.
  If you have any questions, please contact me by e-mail
(jamie.mcallister@faculty.umuc.edu).
Please remember to show ALL of your work on every problem.

At the end of your midterm you must include the following dated statement with your name
typed in lieu of a signature.  Without this signed statement you will receive a zero.

4)  Find the domain and the range of the relation. Use the vertical line test to
determine whether the graph is a function.

5)  Solve the compound inequality and graph the solution set.

-6x > -24 and x + 6 > 5

6)  Fifty-one is 115% of what number?

7)  Determine whether the pair of equations represents perpendicular lines.

y + 4 = -4x
6y = 18x – 10

8)  Decide whether or not the ordered pair is a solution to the equation.

2x + 3y = 19; (2, 5)

9)  Simplify the expression. Do not convert the fractions to decimals.

11)  A standard train ticket in a certain city costs $2.00 per ride.  People who use the
train also have the option of purchasing a frequent rider pass for $15.75 each
month. With the pass, a ticket costs only $1.25 per ride. Use an inequality to
determine the number of train rides in a month for which purchasing the monthly
pass is more economical than purchasing the standard train ticket.

12)  Find the equation of the line. Write the equation using function notation. Then
graph both equations (the given equation and the equation of the line you found) on
the same graph grid.

Through (2, 6); parallel to 4x + y = -1

13)  The second angle of a triangular building lot is three times as large as the first.
The third angle is 10° more than the sum of the other two angles. Find the measure
of the third angle.

14)   Solve the equation.

|n – 6| = |1 – n|

15)  Solve the equation. Graph the solution set.
