International power relations

International power relations

Using appropriate examples, discuss the different ways in which women are active agents in international power relations. How does this modify our understanding of the relation between gender and power?

– International relations ?most masculinist? of social sciences
– Male dominated, most likely to reflect men?s interests & fears
– Internationally disguised women an gender relations through a distinction between the ?domestic? (internal affairs) of the state, and the ?international? (in-between) of states
– Where are women in global politics? Asking this question leads to various interpretations
o Can lead to some suggestions of strong female leaders (Thatcher, Indira Gandhi) ? women are so rarely in power, and when they are, they behave like men (contemporary politics is masculinist)
o Can be used to identify places where women are not ? women prohibited until very recently and still in some states from combat roles ? impossible to reach positions of command in certain armed forces
o Can be used to identify women in places where they may not necessarily be found ? feminists take women seriously ? in Scandinavian states, female proportion of elected body is close to half (women more likely to organise in other politics ? social movements, NGOs)
o Question usually serves to reveal women in various roles
