Literature

There are two writing assignment.
A) Read “Shorstory explanation”chapter 1 PDF files
B) For the first assignment, Read “short story” PDF files
C) For the second assignment, Read chapter 1 PDF files BOOK P 101-111 [“Tim O’Brien” The Things They Carried ]
D) Each assignment needs to be 2 pages long.

1)
The textbook provides six basic approaches to begin to analyze literature. For this assignment, we’ll focus on the first five, leaving “Additional Approaches” for later. Choose one of the five approaches, and write a 2-3 paragraph analysis of “Araby” based on your notes. Title your post with the approach you choose. After five classmates have written about an approach, however, you must choose another one; in this way, we guarantee that we’ve covered all the topics!
2)
Now you will apply some of the information from the textbook reading!

Tim O’Brien has been widely praised for his stark, accurate representations of a soldier’s experience in Vietnam, and has received awards for historical fiction. You may be unfamiliar with some of the terms and events in this story; mark them as you read the first time, then research them before you return for a second reading. Also practice some of the writing and note-taking tips from the textbook reading.
Choose one of the following five questions, and write a thoughtful, insightful response. Title your post carefully, use supporting quotes from the story (properly cited and quoted) to illustrate your claims, and use the literary terms you learned from the textbook reading. Your post must differ significantly in content and insights from your classmates’ in order to receive full credit.
1) How would you define the point of view in this story? How does it affect the way you interpret the characters and the events that take place?
2) What is the effect of the constant repetition in the story? What details do we learn about each of the characters based on the descriptions of their loads.
3) Cross blames himself for Lavender’s death. Is this belief supported by other details or events in the story? Do you think Cross is to blame? Why or why not?
4) We only see Martha through the eyes of Cross. Does he love her? How do his emotions affect him?
5) Interpret the meaning of the title. Are the men ever relieved of their burdens?
