In composing your paper, you are free to follow any standard academic format for matters of form and footnotes; but if you are not thoroughly familiar with the rules for writing college papers, consult a guide such as Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, available at the library or at the college bookstore.
Reference to secondary sources is neither necessary nor usually desirable. If you do make reference to secondary sources, however, be sure to give appropriate credit where due in the proper form. Not only direct quotations but indirect borrowing of ideas must be clearly acknowledged. Carelessness on this point makes a writer susceptible to suspicions of plagiarism, and the University is not charitable in cases of plagiarism, even when it is unintentional. In fairness to all students, anyone who is guilty of plagiarizing will be assigned a failing grade for the course.
Among the things that will make your paper shine are literate writing, clear organization, evidence that you have thought through the questions for yourself, and a lucid argument supported by evidence drawn from the text. Literate writing includes correct diction, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
