Medical Sciences

It is a well-known fact that the vast majority of upper respiratory tract infections are caused by common viruses that are typically self-limiting. Each year during cold and flu season, health care providers working in primary care, urgent care, and emergency medicine are faced with countless patients requesting courses of antibiotics for viral illnesses. While working you encounter a young mother who brings in her child for symptoms or low-grade fever, runny nose, and mild cough. You have diagnosed the child with a viral URI and recommend supportive care such as anti-pyretics, rest, and fluids. The mother states that she had to take a day off from work for this appointment and she insists that you prescribe amoxicillin. In a 1-page journal entry discuss how you would approach this situation.

NOTE FROM THE TEACHER
Welcome to the Week 8 of the course. Thank you all for your patience and understanding with my slight delay in returning your graded writing assignments last week. I have reviewed the weekly discussion board assignment from last week–you all have raised some very valid concerns and options when dealing with a medical provider who is impaired. This is a true reality and hits close to home for many of us especially those working in hospital environments. Anyone is at risk and availability and access is all it takes sometimes to go down that path. I will be reviewing your writing assignment from last week shortly and will look to have returned to you all by mid-week.
This week we will be reviewing the topic of Infectious Disease and antibiotics. Much attention has been paid to the role of antibiotic resistance in this world of the endless request for a magic pill AKA antibiotics. Please read and review the Modules/Course Content for Week 8 for the required readings and supplemental materials which will help you this week. We will again have 2 assignments:
1. Journal assignment–you will react to a patient scenario of a mother requesting antibiotics for her young child with a URI/viral illness. This is a very common reality for many of us in clinical practice. Please make sure you use references, citations throughout your work as a means to back up your key points.
2. Writing assignment–you will explore and research the realm of antibiotic resistance. Please make sure you are thorough and try and use research that is 5 years or less. Follow the assignment guidelines as posted.
Have a great week and please do continue to reach out with any issues, questions, or concerns. I want to mention that some of you are missing assignments and not turning them in–I am more than happy to work with you if I know ahead of time; please reach out. At this point in the course, please make sure work is completed and submitted unless we make arrangements otherwise
