Memoir/Fiction – The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien
Based on the book, The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien (abut the Vietnam War). Discuss the differences between a memoir and fiction. Must explore one or more of the following questions: Is it acceptable to invent scenes or dialogue when writing memoir? If so, must the author let the reader know what is factual, and what is not? Did O’Brien’s unique style create make his novel more powerful in capturing the ways of the Vietnam War, or does it make his novel a weaker one? Use examples from novel to prove position.
Paper must also have: 1. an introduction that introduces your position and evidence with a hook and proper thesis sentence. 2. At least 3 points that include textual evidence and an exploration of why you chose to include these important parts of the book in the paper. 3. A conclusion that reinforces your ideas and then connects their importance to society today. 4. Between each new idea you must use transition words and phrases that link your ideas and guide the reader.
