Medgyes (2006) says that:

It is becoming a generally accepted view that outstanding teachers cannot be squeezed into any pigeonhole: all outstanding teachers are ideal in their own ways, and as such are different from each other. The concept of the ideal teacher resists clear-cut definitions, because there are too many variables to consider (p. 440).

What do you think are the characteristics of the ‘ideal’ teacher? Why?

Do you think both native and non-native speakers can posses these characteristics? Why/why not?

You may use some of these characteristics:

An ideal language teacher should understand the needs of all students and develop strategies to ensure that the needs are met. This implies that the teacher should design classroom lessons in such a way as to meet the needs of each learner. A good language teacher should also be innovative. Innovation is one of the key characteristics that can encourage students to explore new concepts and patterns in a language. A language teacher is considered innovative when they continually adopt and adapt new teaching methods to enhance the learning process. A good language teacher should also be interactive. Individuals often learn a language for communication purposes. By continually interacting with the learners, the teacher can motivate the learners to actively apply new concepts they learn in class. Student-teacher interaction can be achieved by various activities such as group discussions, reading comprehension and mock interviews. Finally, a good language teacher should have a good understanding of the culture of all students. This is because diverse learners require different strategies to achieve their learning goals.

Also, I want you to write that ideal teacher should be Patience and provide safe environment to the student so the students are not afraid to make mistakes because from my own experience I still hate mathematics subject because in my first year of school the mathematics teacher was angry and threaten us by saying STUPID if someone answer wrong answer which make me reluctant to participate in the class and make me hate mathematics.
