Here is the instruction:
IN YOUR OWN WORDS THAT REFLECT AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE COURSE MATERIAL, PROVIDE AN ESSAY RESPONSE TO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS BELOW (DO EITHER A, B OR C). YOUR ESSAY SHOULD BE DOUBLE-SPACED AND APPROXIMATELY 7 PAGES. REMEMBER: YOU ARE WRITING A COLLEGE ESSAY, SO USE COMPLETE SENTENCES, PROPER GRAMMAR, AND OF COURSE, BE CLEAR, CONCISE, AND COHERENT.

A. Explain and evaluate the Mind/Body problem as it relates to Descartes’ position of dualism. What question is central to this problem and why is does this present such a difficulty for those who view human nature as both material and immaterial? Furthermore discuss and evaluate the various types of responses that attempt to resolve this problem. What problems might they encounter? Lastly, take a stance on this issue-what do you believe about yourself? Are you a dualist like Descartes? Or do you hold one of the alternative views identified in the text? Be sure to argue for your position. Provide examples and be specific. (Relevant text material–Chapter 2, specifically Sections 2.3 and 2.7, Module 4. Also, Sections 2.1, 3.9, and 5.2.)

B. Explain and evaluate the view known as transcendental idealism. Compare and contrast it with empiricism and rationalism. In doing so, be sure to discuss Kant’s distinction between noumena and phenomena and how our knowledge of the one differ from that of the other. Furthermore, compare and contrast transcendental idealism to the views of pragmatism and antirealism (as Discussed in chapter 3). Is Kant a pragmatist or an antirealist? Why or why not? Lastly, in discussing this view, be sure to offer your stance on transcendental idealism—does it comport with your epistemology? Why or why not? Provide examples and be specific. (Relevant text material Chapter 5, specifically Section 5.4 and Module 6. Also Sections 5.1-5.3, 3.3, 3.5, 3.7 and 7.4.)

C. Identify and explain an example of a contemporary ethical dilemma a presented in Chapter 7 (either “Abortion” or Euthanasia” from section 7.6). Then, in a compare and contrast manner, analyze the dilemma as it would be dealt with by the three major ethical theories of utilitarianism, Kantian ethics and virtue ethics. That is, discuss how each of these theories would solve this ethical dilemma (e.g., what principles or claims are involved as well as what outcomes are to be determined) and further be sure to provide your view as to which is the best theory in handling this dilemma. Be sure to not only identify the relevant benefits of your view but also defend your position against possible objections. Be specific and provide examples. (Relevant text material–Chapter 7, specifically sections 7.3-7.6, 7.8, 7.9, and Module 7. Also, Sections 2.1-2.7, 3.6, 3.9, and 5.5.)
