POLITICAL SCIENCE

Daniel Wilkinson says that in Venezuela: “each side” (pro-Chavez and
anti-Chavez) is “fully convinced that it is protecting Venezuelan democracy
from the other.” Neither side thinks the other side is treating them, or has ever
treated them, as fellow citizens in a democracy. And each side thinks that they
themselves constitute, or at least represent, “the People.” Explain the views of
these two “sides,” using quotations from Wilkinson’s article and ideas from
the Hellinger textbook. Which side is more persuasive? Why?
Is Hugo Chavez a democrat or a populist caudillo, or some of each?
Explain the different views of his performance as president of Venezuela.
