Reality Television and Race

Reality Television and Race
Participation Exercise #3: Reality Television and Race

The purpose of this exercise is to have you analyze the way race is dealt with in reality television programs. Your job is to identify a reality television show that seems to have race as a subtext or background component of the plot, then assess whether or not it reflects anything from scientific racism. Some suggestions: COPS, Real Housewives of Atlanta, Ice Loves Coco, if you are creative, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. There are MANY other possibilities. As discussed in lecture and the documentary on race, this would include the assumption that darker-skinned/haired people are:

1. Deceptive/dishonest
2. Lacking in self control
3. Prone to criminal behavior
4. Less intelligent
5. Hypersexual
6. Your response should address the following:

The name of the television show (and specific episode(s)) you analyzed
1. A brief description of the characters/plot of the episode/show/movie (as relevant to the assignment)
2. An analysis of two of the racial stereotypes: are they present in your depiction? How are they shown specifically? If not, how are they undermined or challenged?
3. Does gender or class come into play as well? If so, discuss how.
4. What conclusions do you draw about the medium of reality television and race? Does it transcend the old stereotypes of scientific racism? Or perpetuate them?
This exercise should be two pages in length, double spaced, and submitted in class. If you are not present in class to discuss and instead upload the assignment, you will receive half the points you earn.
