Shift-share analysis (of a local government area)

Shift-share analysis (of a local government area)
Project description
This order would suit a geography major, or economics or even statistics major, however it is open for anyone who can fill it. I just need to hand something in.

Topic/question: Conduct a shift-share analysis of an Australian non-metropolitan Local Government Area (LGA) (I have chosen Gold Coast, in Queensland) for the period 2001-2011 and discuss your findings.

(taken from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website) – the Census Basic Community Profile (BCP) for Gold Coast Local Government Area (LGA) AND one for Queensland (this is the state Gold Coast is in). Please conduct a shift-share analysis of it.

These files are a Time Series Profile (TSP) for Gold Coast LGA AND Queensland which gives you access to 2001, 2006 and 2011 employment data.

You will need to download the sample Excel table (it’s an example for the town of Armidale) that I have uploaded and to enter their own data into those, exactly following the industry of employment categories, etc

To analyse your results comment on:
• What the national (or state), structural and differential components tell you about the economic structure of your chosen region (Gold Coast);
• The reasons for these results. In doing so, try and situate your Local Government Area’s (LGA’s) result within a broader context. For example, in analysing an LGA from a highly touristy region such as Gold Coast, you would discuss the extent to which the LGA’s performance is driven by forces within the broader region and is typical of other similarly-positioned LGAs. Gold Coast would have a high amount of employment in tourism because of this.
• What strategies your Local Government Area (LGA) could or should employ in the light of these results to enhance local economic development.

Please set it out in essay style: intro, body/discussion, and conclusion. I will upload some readings, the example excel spreadsheet for the town of Armidale, some lecture notes, and some other notes. One document, titled Uneven development in non-metropolitan Australia’, you will just need to read from 4.4 where it discusses shift-share analysis.
