Social Behavior

Briefly describe the primary difference between the Theory of Reasoned Action and Theory of Planned Behavior. Do you think this difference represents an important distinction in terms of predicting behavior? Why or why not? Can you think of any behaviors that might not be predicted well by TRA, but would be by TPB?
———————–Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with more than 1 million skin cancers diagnosed annually. Major risk factors for skin cancer are skin sensitivity and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. High risk behaviors include sunbathing, use of tanning salons, and inadequate use of sun protection. Current recommendations for skin cancer prevention focus on reducing sun exposure by 1) avoiding midday sun exposure, 2) wearing protective clothing (wide brimmed hat, long sleeves and pants) if exposed to the sun, and 3) regular use of sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater. Groups at particularly high risk for sun exposure are adolescents and young adults and Caucasians. Despite the potentially harmful consequences and the methods readily available to prevent those consequences, it appears that the majority of young people spend prolonged periods of time in the sun while failing to protect themselves adequately.

Using specific constructs of the TRA/TPB, discuss intervention components that might promote sun protection behaviour in young adults.

In the Sheats et al. article (2013) on African American women and their intentions to buy and eat dark green leafy vegetables (DGLV), what sort of intervention would you design to get them to buy and eat more DGLV, using the constructs of the TRA/TPB ?
