B.    Cultural Assimilation and Pluralism
Discuss your own personal leanings toward either cultural assimilation or pluralism (see mini-lecture 6). Picture the two on a continuum as we did with cultural values:

In your view, what would be the ideal for the U.S. in terms of cultural relations? Do you prefer a society that leans more toward assimilation to the dominant group (European Americans), or do you prefer pluralism? Use specific examples. Which languages should be spoken in which contexts? What types of foods or music should be available to whom? Which cultural content should be taught in our education system? What should parents teach their children with regard to culture? How should we arrange our neighborhoods? What about religious practices?
