Your assignment will consist of an analysis of the family as portrayed in the popular media. You will then analyze and critique its definition and portrayal of the family. For example, you may want to take a television show that is aired weekly, or you may want to view a feature film that has been released within the last few years. Look at the images of the family in that show or movie. What are the images of women and or men? What does the show or movie tell us about gender roles and family relations? You are being asked to critique the form and portrayal of the family and not analyze its function. Compare these family forms and roles to real life as we have read about in the book. Are the roles shown in the movie or tv show accurate? Why or why not? Using topics discussed in class and in your readings, analyze these images in terms of their impact on the way that we view relationships, family, and sexuality. Write a 2-3 page paper in which you discuss these things.
