SSUD 11-105 Land Economy and the Environment
The United Nations introduces its ‘global issues, population’ webpage as follows:

‘In 1950, five years after the founding of the United Nations, world population was estimated at around 2.6 billion people. According to UN estimates, it reached 5 billion on 11 July 1987 and hit 6 billion on 12 October 1999.

On 31 October 2011, the global population reached 7 billion. A global movement “7 Billion Actions” was launched to mark this milestone.
The UN Population Division projects a world population of 9 billion in 2043 and 10 billion in 2083.’

Adopting perspectives which are relevant to the study of this subject (SSUD 11-105) identify and discuss issues, policies and programs which are informed by population growth and management. Your essay should give consideration to the global/international, national and local scale of the topic.

Process:

1. Identify the character of the problem. The UN site and Wikipedia are both useful places to start in order to get a broad view but then you must carry out more detailed research from a range of sources (say 15 to 20) to ensure you achieve a broad, deep and cogent view of the issues being discussed.
2. Identify and justify the range of policy issues relevant to the subject matter Land Economy and the Environment which you propose to discuss.
3. After identifying the broad topic, choose one of these areas which is of particular interest to you.
4. Prepare a critical review of the policy, strategy, issues, constraints and prospects related to the specific topic area nominated.
5. You may wish to search a range of media sources as well as more formal institutional information sources to identify community sentiment to the policy and its implementation.
6. Ensure you use an 11 or 12 font; number the pages; ensure you fully reference all material which you use and record using the Harvard (author/date) style; ensure you are totally responsible for the work you hand in; proof read your work at least three times and/or get someone else to read it before you hand it in. Typos and spelling errors drive us mad!
7. Email your lecturer or tutor (Ekaterina or Isara) if you need help. They will happily review a draft of your assignment until two weeks before the due date but not after that. The purpose of this is to help you manage your effort in a timely and effective manner and thus to achieve the best result you can.
8. Ensure you include the TurnItIn similarity statistics at the end of your assignment.
9. Enjoy writing your assignment.
