Survey of other Forms of Representation

Survey of other Forms of Representation

ask: This project will unfold on multiple levels. As a group we will explore the definitions and meanings of “other forms of representation”. Moreover, embedded in this survey we look at student writing samples and effective ways of responding to and evaluating student texts.

Brainstorm and Research Questions: 5 points
What is the general context of your survey? Articulate your main research question that will drive your inquiry and two related sub-questions that will also serve as a guide to this paper.

Statement of Purpose: 10 points
Spend some time to really think about and to articulate your main purpose. Use the rhetorical acronym PAIBOC to guide this pre-write. What is the overall purpose of this activity? Who will be your primary and secondary audience(s)? Your peers? Members of a specific discourse community? What specific information will you be looking for? What special benefits will your readers gain? Who will benefit? Are there any caveats or obstacles that you must overcome to complete this project? Be sure to establish, describe, and discuss the general context of survey.

Definition(s) of “Other Forms of Representation”: 10 points
Aim for an all inclusive definition of forms of representation as a point of departure. Then you should articulate the specific form(s) that you wish to address.

Individual Contribution to the Survey: 10 points
Your contribution will shape subsequent group discussion of multiple texts. Students will take turns to share their “findings” with the cohort as we compile and collate: 1) forms of representation and 2) 3 samples of student texts.

Group Discussion: 10 points
After reading Nancy Sommers’ article, students will share, compare, and contrast samples of student texts and other forms of representation.

First Draft: 10 points
Talk about the relevance of the text or form, how it presents a fit with your preparation at the graduate level, and how it will inform your career. Remember to situate your discussion within the context of the teaching of writing. The final paper must have a full page of References in APA format and should have been carefully edited.

Cover Memo: 10 points
Use the conventional memo format to write a single-spaced, one-page memo to the instructor. Describe the thought processes you went through as you worked on this paper. Discuss your reaction to the survey process and to the student writing samples. You should initial your memo by hand just beside your name. Submit all the above components along with this memo in the two-pocket, solid-colored portfolio for the completion of this project. The Cover Memo is written last but placed on top.
