IV. WRITE 6 DIRECT QUOTATIONS with MLA CITING AND EXPLANATIONS for YOUR RPS EVIDENCE:
A. Direct quotations are important passages you select from your research sources, which support your ideas and convince the reader that you are knowledgeable about
the topic.
B. These direct quotations are inserted into your paragraphs as EVIDENCE when you start drafting your long essay.
C. Direct quotations as evidence should include facts, expert testimony with their names and titles, specifics, statistics, examples, percentages, numbers, dates,
interviews, comparisons, and other important information.
D. Use the Rubric for Research Paper in content and in Doc Sharing as a guideline for writing your draft, and use the RP OUTLINE also in content.
E. Direct quotations should not be selected from Wikipedia, blogs, or from sources which do not have an author or authors. That is, not everything you search on Google
or the Internet is appropriate although by reading these sources, you obtain background knowledge to write from.
F. Quotations should be from reliable sources in academic databases such as Infotrac and Newsbank, which you access through your college’s library or through the
Kansas [or your own state] Card Library online through your local library. [As a college student, you can access the library off-campus. Email or call your colleges
librarian for assistance.]
G. Use parenthetical citing after quotations with writers or writers names and page number/s. (Allende and Lanier 220-22).
H. Quotations should be written exactly as in the text where you get them.
I. Note-taking as your research: Print out articles if possible. Highlight or underline sections which you think are important and may want to use as your direct
quotations.
J. Be finicky about the quotations you choose to write because they transfer to paragraphs in RP and are your EVIDENCE.
K. By choosing good quotations for this assignment, you will not have to go back and do more research later while drafting your essay.
V. HOW TO COMPLETE THE 6 QUOTATIONS ASSIGNMENT: See example below.
A. A. Create a box for the article from a magazine or journal or book, and write an MLA style entry. This will be an entry in your Works Cited.
B. B. Introduce the direct quotation with a signal or key phrase such as: Toni Morrison in her book Racism and Teaching at Princeton: My Life as a Professor asserts,
Teaching at a predominantly white university as an African-American has its challenges (145).
C. C. Add your direct quotation of a few to several sentences. At the end of the quotation, add parenthetical citation: (145). Here you only add the page since you
introduced the writers name like Toni Morrison in the signal phrase.
D. D. Finally, add an explanation of 2-3 sentences to connect your quotation to your topic. This is your analysis or explanation or interpretation, which is the
nitty-gritty of writing about what you are reading and which is evidence to support your ideas.
E. E. Avoid writing: ” I think this quote means or I think this is saying. . . .”
F. F. For this assignment, you will complete 1-4 SIX times.
Here is an EXAMPLE of a direct quotation with citing, pages, and explanation for the assignment.

Margo DeMello declares, Tattooing has moved from being a symbol of societys outcasts to a symbol of rock stars, models, and todays youth. With a shift in public
perception has come a shift in meaning as well, as tattooing moves from stigma to status symbol (49).
4. TWO-THREE SENTENCE EXPLANATION:
Those who chose to be tattooed are no longer from the fringes of society but instead are people who want to stray from rigid rules and others expectations. In this
way, getting a tattoo is making an individual statement to not be bound by how our culture expects us to look and to act. A tattoo symbolizes a persons personality and
a way to adorn the body.
