Abortion

Paper instructions:

First, think of a specific and highly-controversial issue that you want to write about.  Make sure it is an issue upon which reasonable people disagree, i.e., there must be actual controversy

when it comes to where people stand on the issue.  Then, take a stance on the issue – this will be the conclusion of your argument.

Then, once you know where you stand on the issue, think about the 3 strongest reasons that would help support your stance.  These are your major premises.  You want to make sure that

these are immediately relevant to your conclusion and that they ‘lead to’ the conclusion in a clear and reasonable manner.  In other words, DO NOT simply stuff your paper with a bunch of

marginally-related statements or rants – every bit of your paper should be aimed at providing support for your conclusion.

Organize your paper in the following way:  First, state what the issue is and what your stance will be in the introductory paragraph.  Don’t go into too much detail here – save the detailed

description of your controversy for your first body paragraph.  Following this, your second and remaining body paragraphs should include your 3 strongest premises.  Flesh these out – explain

them in detail, making sure they are complete, comprehensible, and that they don’t run your paper into unnecessary tangents.  Next, conclude your paper with a small paragraph that briefly

reviews your argument and restates your conclusion.  Finally, on a separate page at the end of your paper, briefly organize your argument into standardized form, listing each of the premises

followed by your conclusion.

Keep in mind that this is NOT a research paper, but rather a persuasive paper.  You are not required to do any outside research.  However, if you feel the need to include statistics, quotes

from other authors, or basically anything that isn’t your own idea, make sure you properly cite within the text and include a works-cited page on the back of your paper.
