A Civil Action: Book Review Assignment

Write a seven to ten page book review on Jonathan Harr’s, A Civil Action. This book review exercise is intended to take students beyond merely focusing on writing skills and style–which should be at a high level of proficiency–and instead, serves to develop students’ abilities to critically analyze the ideas of others. For that reason, students will provide a brief summary A Civil Action, no more than three pages, and then develop a theme about the book that you believe deserves further exploration. For instance, a student may delve into the injustices of the American judicial system. Or, students may look at environmental ethics and the role of corporations. A through reading of Harr’s work will reveal many themes worth writing about.

When writing, ensure your grammar is accurate, your sentences complete and unambiguous, and your overall logic is sound. Papers that have sound logic, but little grammatical accuracy will be docked accordingly. Moreover, plagiarism is prohibited. Plagiarism is the presenting of distinctive words or ideas of another as one’s own without crediting the source. Plagiarism equates to cheating, and if discovered, will result in a severe reduction in grade.
