A Refutation

A refutation is an argumentative essay that advances the writer’s thesis-claim (purpose) by including a rebuttal of a specific counter-argument.

Find a position you wish to advocate. Then locate a specific essay by a well-respected author who takes a position opposing your own.  Use this worthy Opponent’s Argument to clarify important limitations of the opposition viewpoint. Remember, however, that your Opponent’s voice is secondary. In your essay, the central voice is your own. Emphasize your ambitious goal to have your audience accept your thesis- claim of fact, value or action.

As you reason creatively and perform research, plan various modes of support for your thesis-claim: logos, pathos as well as ethos appeals. Appeals to reason should be more prominent that appeals to reputation (ethos) and relationship (pathos).  Validate sound deduction and induction with sufficient and relevant facts and authoritative reports (“supportive expert”). Consult and apply the specialized knowledge of at least one Supportive Expert.
