Explain how Lessing makes his case in the form of a play set in Jerusalem during the Crusades that centers around four characters: The Muslim ruler Saladin, a Christian knight, a Jewish merchant, Nathan, and his (adopted) daughter, Rachel. Note that the play progresses from expressions of mutual distrust and invocation of traditional negative stereotypes to mutual respect, even love. You will have to provide three (3) examples from the text to show how Lessing portrays the transformation of the characters’ views from suspicion and religious stereotyping to mutual toleration and acceptance.
