Poster Assignment
You have been requested by the Department of Modern Languages and Literature at your university to create a poster for their annual Hispanic

event. The goal is to attract the university community (students, faculty and staff) and residents of thecommunity to mingle on campus through

the celebration of Hispanic culture.
Your poster MUST:
• Be catchy and/or creative and/or inventive and/or beautiful and/or clever and tasteful…find a way to get people to look at this poster!
• Spotlight the name of the event: LA NOCHE HERÉTICA
• List the following highlights of the event: music, dance, theatrical performances, food and drink.
• Somehow indicate that local residents are also welcome to come to campus to this event. Find some creative way to attract local residents

interested in Hispanic culture using images, wording, etc. If you decide to use pictures, here are images of the event in a previous year:

NOTE: You may use ANY PICTURES you want FROM THE INTERNET, but if your poster is picked as the winning poster, we might have to replace the

images you originally used if the organization cannot get the copyrights to it (but you will NOT LOSE MARKS on your assignment) . If you want to

try to build a poster that won’t violate copyright laws, use your own photography or images from on-line stock photo websites such as

www.istockphoto.com or www.bigstockphoto.com or www.shutterstock.com. or any other one you like that will give us the right to use the images as

part of the campaign. Some sites say “Free” to use. If you use an image from ANY ONLINE STOCKPHOTO site where we can have the rights to that

photo, and your poster is chosen, then we can go to the site and pay for the image. Keep all references to your images for copyright issues.

Don’t worry about the watermark on these images, you won’t lose marks for that if you include it in the poster. But if you feel that the

watermark interferes with the look of your poster, then consider any of the options above or consider these, here are some more sites with FREE

Marking Scheme For Your Assignment:
Based on what you have learned from your labs and lectures, put together a professional poster that uses graphic elements/techniques (fonts,

shapes, opacity, text variation, effects, etc.) that meets the requirements listed above in terms of content and below in terms of Photoshop

requirements.
Criteria:
• Photoshop File Name: (for example: jsmit_poster.psd) NOTE: file name must be all lower case
• Final Poster Image Name: (for example: jsmit_poster.jpg) NOTE: file name must be all lower case
• Canvas size: 792 x 1224 (or 1224 X 792) pixels in size
• Resolution: 72 pixels per inch
• Colour creativity: Whether the colours of your images and fonts and backgrounds and shapes co-ordinate and flow nicely with the overall

look of your poster. Does it look like you put thought into the colours and how well they work together in ALL elements of your poster?
• Theme: (meet the requirements listed above)
o Layout: (is it crowded or or is it nicely laid out with good use of white space)
o Image appropriateness with theme
o Is message evident based on requirements
• Photoshop Elements:
o You MUST include 1 shape from the shape tool (one of the predefined ones, you can not create your own shape).
o You MUST include 1 gradient fill somewhere (perhaps in your shape(s) or in your background or in one of your fonts or whichever way you

want to incorporate into your design).
• Artwork Detail:
o You can start with any image as a background or choose to work with a solid color/blend and add images as you need them.
o You can use any images you find on the Internet, either from the list above or from other sites but it is very important that you include

a reference for each image you use (include this in the “Assignment Text” box of Owl)
o Text: is the text easy to read, crisp, is the size of the text appropriate?
o Artwork/element dimensions (are elements of proper dimensions relative to overall image/other elements in poster). Are elements presented

in a professional way?
o Quality of images: (crisp vs. pixilated vs. blurred/fuzzy, sizing relative to overall poster)
o Balance – is poster well balanced with the elements used?
• Content:
o Evidence of title, contact information: any other key information you feel are appropriate within this poster
o Is message evident in the content?
o NOTE: Try to provide enough information to make sure the requirements are met but also remember this is a poster, so avoid being overly

wordy. You must make good design decisions about what to include in your poster to make it both aesthetically pleasing to the eye and contain

useful information that would attract someone to your poster.
• Technical:
o Files (.PSD/.JPG) Must work properly and viewable from your publish area (this is when the size of your poster may become a factor)
o All layers must be labelled with good layer names
o References for ALL images used must be cited. Provide web site address (or explain where you got the image) for each image used in your

poster. Include these references when you are doing the owl submission of your assignment. Note: you will receive an automatic 0 if references
