Organizational behavior and management in law enforcement (Custom 3rd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc. ISBN: 9781269653459. Thanks (William) Many criminal justice organizations promote a clear formal hierarchical structure that is “typically rigid, based on strict rules and downward communication” (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2012, p. 25), and I believe that the leadership needs to be a balance of precise discipline and genuine compassion for motivating the employees within. Criminal justice employees have some of the most difficult jobs throughout the nation, and unfortunately many times receive little positive support from the general public as well as within their particular organization. Many employees have a deep passion for what they do and are highly motivated, however this motivation needs to be cultivated on a regular basis due to the human element involved. People in general need positive reinforcement, especially in the criminal justice sector where pride and integrity for the task at hand is paramount. Leadership needs to be strict, yet supportive in a manner as to encourage the individual employee’s core values. Additionally, leadership must be consistently creative to motivate the employees within in order to get the best possible service delivery out of them and to keep team efforts running efficiently. It is important for criminal justice leaders to understand that “engendering positive work environments will go a long way to creating a climate of motivation” (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2012, p. 129). Creating the proper environment means that the leader must have a clear view and foundational knowledge of human needs in order to effectively manage and motivate the employees, for “Managerial success and organizational effectiveness depend on how well managers understand human behavior in the workplace.” (More, Vito, & Walsh, 2012, p.51). From a professional prospective, one of the criminal justice agencies that I happen to liaise with could definitely implement my ideas of individual and team motivation along with strict discipline in order to bring the employees to a higher level of self awareness and strengthen their overall focus and pride in their critical missions. This would enhance their overall capabilities to not only deliver better service but to enhance morale which could lead to many positive outcomes. In the end, leaders within criminal justice organizations have to consistently adjust to the needs of their employees while keeping a clear balance for structure and tailored support in order to effectively lead, and in many cases, keep the team safe and secure.
