his project requires you to create a new criminal justice system, almost from the ground up. But, it’s not as daunting as that might seem. Make sure that you read all the instructions thoroughly before you begin!
The project tests not only your ability to comprehend and understand the variations and nuances of criminal justice systems around the world. It also challenges your creativity. There are countless possibilities for responding to this project. How you respond is just as important as what you provide.
I want you to think about the project from a variety of perspectives. It might be entirely personal to you or it could be a scholarly derivation based solely on research. However, explaining “why” a particular aspect to the system is chosen is at least as important as “what” you have chosen to do in that system. So, for example, if you believe that the death penalty should be applicable, that’s fine as long as you explain why. By the same token, if you think the death penalty should not apply, you need to explain that, too. It’s not a concern to me which choice you make, only that you can present and support it with scholarly discussion.
To help you get started, there is a Resources page with a wide range of links, documents, and primary source materials available for you. Many of them are simply gathered together from other parts of this course, but some are original and found only there. Either way, the materials ought to be helpful!
So, are you ready? You are about to embark on an adventure…
You are the new president of Erua, an island country located in the Caribbean Sea southeast of Florida. Erua was founded only recently by a group of Americans from Florida who, unhappy with the changes that had occurred in their homeland, decided that they needed to form a new and better government.
All members of the group are multi-millionaires who have pooled all their wealth into the government. The island has vast resources to sustain you. There are sufficient people with talent, intelligence, and ability who are accompanying you to create a viable economy. You have already made friends with your new neighbors while maintaining friendly connections with the US. You believe that you will be successful in establishing your new country.
You and the group have recently studied the justice systems (corrections, policing, and the judiciary) of such places as England, France, Germany, China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. As the new president of Erua you would like to propose that the country adopt a new criminal justice and legal system. You have promised your constituency that you will provide them with an outline of that system which will consist of the following:
1.It will begin with a 1-page executive summary of the policing, judiciary, and corrections systems that you intend to introduce. It must briefly address all three areas in that summary. (NOTE FROM THE PROF: It might actually be easier to write this part AFTER you have written the rest of the paper, since an executive summary is a summary of the report/paper that is to follow).
2.You will select one of the three areas: (1) policing, (2) judiciary, or (3) corrections which will be the primary focus for your project. The balance of your project will cover only the one area you have chosen, however, depending on what you create, it may be necessary for you to briefly explain how other areas might be affected.
3.The next pages will focus on that subject area and will consist of 3 to 5 pages of double-spaced text. It should be a narrative description of the specific criminal justice system that you intend to make, including the reasons for it, the basis for choosing it, and how it compares to other countries such as England, France, Germany, China, Japan, or Saudi Arabia.
4.You must NOT select the United States as the basis for any of your selections. Focus ONLY on the six model countries identified in your text, England, France, Germany, China, Japan, or Saudi Arabia. You may, however, want to make some comparisons to US law in your paper. Over-reliance on the US in your paper will detract from your grade.
5.It will end with a 1-page conclusion describing why you believe that the suggestions you make are suitable or why you believe they will work best for this new island country.

To facilitate the presentation of the new criminal justice system, you have promised to provide it in the following format:
•a cover page, consisting of your name and a title for your proposal
•from 5 to 7 pages of typed, double-spaced information explaining your choices, as described above.
•Citations will be pinpoint citations in footnote form. (A pinpoint citation is one that identifies the exact page of the cited material on which the quoted material or the paraphrased or referenced material can be found). •a bibliography of all cited materials as well as other materials that you used in your research to develop the material.
•Neither the cover page nor the bibliography count as part of the 5 to 7 page requirement.
