How does Shakespeare convey the theme of Ambition through the technique of Imagery?
The tragedy ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare conveys the theme of ambition and the devastation that follows when moral boundaries are passed through a central character being Lady Macbeth, reinforced by the use of Imagery. Lady Macbeth is a driving force supporting her husband to seize the crown at any given opportunity and to any extent fuelled by her ambition.
“Come to my woman’s breasts, and take my milk for gall” is the phrase Lady Macbeth utters in her soliloquy which reveals her ruthlessness and strong ambition as a character. Shakespeare offers the imagery of Lady Macbeth’s “milk” which is a symbol of nurturing being replaced by a vile poisonous acid known as “gall”. Here, Lady Macbeth’s ambition is evident as the expresses a lengthy extent to which she will go in order for her to assist her husband in obtaining the crown to Scotland. Furthermore, she calls upon evil spirits do such things to her as she believes such qualities of feminism prevent her from committing the murder she would have undertaken herself had she possessed the masculine-like traits of the time in order to pursue her extensive ambition. Finally, Shakespeare conveys the theme of Ambition through the use of imagery within Lady Macbeth’s soliloquy as she expresses her extreme lengths she will go to in a bid for her husband to gain the throne of Scotland.
