Applying Theory to Family Research
Select a theory that relates to a specific family problem. State the family problem, identify the related theory, and identify the original theorist (the primary source). Examples of theories include critical race theory, feminist theory, social learning theory, family systems theory, and so forth. •Explain and critically evaluate the theory and describe how it relates to the problem. Support your explanation and evaluation by citing primary source references from the original theorist. Do not use a secondary source—that is, the explanation of the theory as perceived by a writer other than the original theorist. •Identify and describe an example of how this theory can be applied in a qualitative or quantitative study. For example, suppose the family problem you selected was violence within a family unit and the related theory was Bandura’s social learning theory. Then, you might describe a qualitative or quantitative study that examines the incidence of intergenerational patterns of abuse in cases involving family violence.
