In order to develop an identity; a person must first learn to communicate effectively, be adaptive under all circumstances and continue to transition through the next phases of the lifespan cycle.
There is a stage phased into expression, finding self-concept and identity. This could occur from infancy, learning that feelings are recognized, expressions of needs and wants, through an attachment stage associated with parents and or a babysitter. A toddler transitioning through to school aged children are learning about, phasing in and out of specific environments, in which they are becoming familiar with, as well as diversity, progress into liking their learning options. Transitioning from the educational level of elementary to middle school: “Optimization”; is occurring (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, p 613). Optimization helps a young adult transition into high school successfully, as to knowing him or herself, sexuality, desires, thinking and about future educational and employment opportunities.
As children progress through the lifespan developmental stages, the launching has been taught, as adolescences progress into middle adulthood. The launching process of the emotional and physical detachment from the family unit is done at this time. Middle adults are prepared for employment, attending a University and or establishing personal relationships to eventually marry and be independent. In young adulthood, even though he or she has thought about the futures; a consideration of his or her parents have wanted for them; college, career, living independently on one’s own, to launch out on their own. Are young adults baffled by all the decisions they will be making for themselves; reassurances are needed, not unanswered questions.

Suggestions: Would be therapy or counseling. Young adults don’t necessarily have a vision, insight nor a commitment at that time, to make such important decisions. Insecurity sets in and their emotions, such as overwhelming fear and anxiety take over. Once a young adult has had counseling or therapy with or without their parents present, and they have reassurance from actually discussing his or her feelings, to see how what they are seeing through visualizing his or her opportunities. A young adult’s confident levels are motivated to try. The intellectual functioning stages, that must be processed are acquisition, achieving, responsible, executive, reorganizational and re-integrative. If young adults or middle-aged adults continue to live with their parents, they will not progress through the necessary stages they will need to Launch successfully.
