Module Assignment
Interviewing adolescents poses a new set of challenges for the practitioner. Adolescent boys and young men can be particularly difficult to interview. The 2 videos in this module were developed by experts in adolescent health care at Boston Children’s Hospital. They are designed to help you develop effective techniques to use while working with adolescent males.
Instructions for responding to each vignette:
1. As you view the vignette pay attention to the facial expressions and non-verbal communication of both the patient and the provider, in addition to verbal communication
2. Observe and record verbal and non-verbal communication by both the provider and the patient – write down actual phrases, verbal or non-verbal communication, body language, behaviors, etc.
3. Record your observations in a table such as the one below (a separate table for each vignette clearly labelled with the title of the vignette) – provide a minimum of 3 observations in each column
4. Write a brief summary statement for each video saying if you thought the interview went well or not and why it did or did not.
Observations
Positive elements of this interview – include examples from #2 above Negative elements of this interview – include examples from #2 above Suggestions for the provider
