Outline and Preliminary Thesis Statement for Research Paper

This week, you will be completing the outline and a preliminary thesis for your research paper. Now that you have had a chance to read some research on your chosen topic, you should be thinking about your position on your topic and how to organize your paper. For your outline, include the following sections:

1. The introductory hook – What type of hook are you using? Write out the specific sentence(s) that will form the hook.

2. The preliminary thesis statement – What is your position on your topic?

3. The headings and content items for each section of the essay:
History of the Topic: What events/laws/situations/facts will you include to set up the background of your topic?
Your Position on the Topic: What is your perspective on your chosen topic and why have you chosen this position?
Counterclaims to your position: What two arguments are you going to present that challenge your own position? How do you plan to disprove the opposing arguments?

4. The concluding technique – What type of concluding technique are you using? Write out the specific sentence(s) that will end the conclusion portion of the essay.
