Assignment
Choose one of the two “document projects” posted on our course site on Moodle 2 and write a three- to five-page paper exploring the ways that the project of your
choice exemplifies a major theme or themes in early American colonial history. Pursue these questions in an effort to thoroughly analyze the documents in the project:
What specific question or problem does your document project address? How do the documents illustrate multiple perspectives? Is there any common ground in the
documents? Do the documents fit into and reveal a larger story of change over time? What is the historical significance of the event that your document project
explores? Please explain using evidence from the documents.
Below are the “prompts” your thesis should answer.
For Document Project 2 (King Philip’s War): How do the documents help you answer the following questions:
• Why did conflict between New England settlers and the region’s Indians escalate over the course of the seventeenth century?
• What do Indian perceptions, and disagreements among Englishmen, reveal about English-Indian relations in New England?
• What accounts for the ferociousness of King Philip’s War?
For Document Project 4 (The Great Awakening): How do the documents help you answer the following questions:
• What groups were most attracted to the religious revivals of the early eighteenth century? Why?
• How do these documents reveal the religious, social, and economic tensions that were a part of the eighteenth-century colonial society?
Your paper must have an introduction, body, and conclusion, and must have a thesis statement.
Formatting requirements:
• Use 12-point font
• Use typical fonts: i.e. Courier, Times New Roman, Cambria, etc.
• Use one-inch margins
• Double-spaced
• Printed on only one side of the page

• The paper must be typed (i.e. word processed), must be stapled (if hard copy is required), and you must have your name typed on the front page of the paper
• For citations of the document project you need only put the number of the document in parentheses following the sentence in which you paraphrased or quoted from a
document; example: (4.7)
• For citations from the Hewitt and Lawson textbook you need only put the last name of the author and the page number in parentheses following the sentence in which
you paraphrased or quoted from the textbook; example: (Hewitt, 98)
