American Indian Education Statement:

A Final Statement on Native Education Today

In this final paper:
You will be making your final overall statement about what you have learned in this course, and how it will potentially impact your future work as a teacher, who may work with American Indian students, as well as being a teacher who will work with non-Native students that may need to learn about American Indian history and topics.

What your paper needs to include:
Your paper needs to have these sections. Use these titles as subheadings for this paper. When you write each section, make sure you are answering the questions under each subheading clearly.

Introduction – provide a brief introduction where you state what your paper will be about

Literature Review – provide a brief literature review (1-2 pages total) where you clearly point out readings that we have done in class which were important and meaningful for you. Make sure the sources in your literature review connect directly to the statement you will make about your philosophy of working with American Indian students, as well as how this class may impact your teaching of non-Native students

– which readings shaped your thinking?
– which readings have challenged you the most?
– which topics have been the most important for you?

My Philosophy of Education and American Indians – This is your statement about working with American Indian students, and is based largely on what we have read and discussed in class.

-how would I characterize my approach to teaching and working with American Indian students?
-how would I characterize my approach to working with American Indian families and communities?
-what kinds of things could I do to support American Indian issues within the school?
-what kinds of things should I avoid if I want to be supportive of American Indian peoples?

Teaching Non-Indian People and American Indian Experiences – here is where you will discuss how the topics we have discussed and learned about American Indian peoples applies or has implications for non-Indian peoples.

-how are the topics we learned about important for non-Indian people to consider?
-how can learning and thinking about these topics support the learning of non-Indian students?
-what are your thoughts about being a non-Indian person thinking about Indian issues?

What I Still Need to Learn – think about a plan for further and future research:

-what are some things that I would still like to learn?
-what are some of my blind spots, or what are some of the blind spots that this course didn’t cover?
-how might I go about learning more about American Indian peoples?

Conclusion – conclude your paper with some final thoughts and feelings about the material and content of the course (we did a lot of group discussions about the books we read about native Americans. Please refer back to my old paper to talk about this)

Your Artistic Representation
For your final art project, you will need to use your graphite to create a drawing that represents the theme of your paper, on supporting Indigenous ideas and peoples. You can choose any symbol or representation of this theme (google images might help for inspiration).

Some requirements for your piece:
1) It needs to be on a page no smaller then 8”x11”
2) A majority of the page needs to have some pigment on it
3) Your symbol needs to have an explanation along with it
