Prior to the American Revolution, Virginians dealt with a plethora of problems internally and externally. In Forced Founders: Indians, Debtors, Slaves, & the Making of the American Revolution in Virginia, Woody Holton argued the idea that Virginia’s leaders were desperate men who had to declare independence. Yet, it was not the leaders, also known as gentry, which made the decision. Throughout his book, Holton introduced different groups of people that played a crucial role in forcing Virginia towards war in 1776.
